Building Extensions

At some stage in the night I woke up from a dream, and in the dream I was in the process of building a house. Let me point out that I know nothing about building anything in my waking life, or it would seem, in my sleeping life either.

The house was all timber, as in there were no bricks. I was up to the bit where I had all the cladding on outside, had partially built half a roof, but them suddenly decided I needed to build a second story extension.

So I set about making the first beam and then I had that fast-forward thing where it was nearly finished. It even had furniture, a TV and ornaments in it – the only problem was that it had no stairs.

So I quickly decided a spiral staircase in the entry hall was required, and no sooner had I thought of it when I was standing on the top rung. I recall it was very rickety as I had only just installed it and it wasn’t secured properly to the floor of the second story.

At this point I looked around and as the staircase wobbled back and forth, so did the entire house. I realised that although it appeared to be almost complete and self supporting, I had actually not put a single nail in… anywhere. It was like a house of cards, all leaning against itself.

And there was I, standing on top of a shoddilly installed spiral staircase deliberately wobbling it…

I had a dream that I was starring in a production of Hamlet, and my boss was the director, and he kept pulling me to the side to work on new projects which kept me from learning my lines. It was almost show-time and he was still giving me stuff and I still didn’t know my lines. But the strangest part was he kept referencing the time I didn’t know my lines in our production of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” and how I still nailed the part.

Then I woke up half sweating, and half laughing.

Sorry to leave such a long, involved comment here, but I love dream analysis. I’ve done a bit of cut and paste from http://dreammoods.com

    House
To see a house in your dream, represents your own soul and self. Specific rooms in the house indicate a specific aspect of your psyche. In general, the attic represents your intellect, the basement represents the unconscious, etc.

To see an old, run-down house in your dream, represents your old beliefs, attitudes and how you used to think or feel. A situation in your current life may be bringing about those same old attitudes and feelings. Alternatively, the old house may symbolize your need to update you mode of thinking. If the house is new, then it indicates that you are entering into a new phase or new area in your life.

    Building
To see a building in your dream, represents the self and the body. How high you are in the building indicates a rising level of understanding or awareness.

…Sounds like there is something in your life you are trying to figure out or work through, and are not sure if you trust your conclusions? Or something like that… Also sounds like you are making progress:

    Stairs
To dream that you are walking up a flight of stairs, indicates that you are achieving a higher level of understanding. You are making progress into your spiritual/emotional/material journey

To see spiral or winding stairs, signify growth and/or rebirth.

I would say your Id is in conflict with your Superego–

The journey up the stairs–especially to a higher room like an attic–symbolizes a rise in consciousness.

However, there are no nails holding the boards in, so you feel that adequate work has not been done in the lower level.

Is it any significance that the stairs are spiral stairs?

A hypnotherapist I used to have had me envision walking DOWN the staircase–but that is to get you hypnotized, i.e., to regress back into the subconscious somewhat. Curiously, ANOTHER hypnotherapist had me envision going down an elevator–an elevator that happened to be in my residential house. (They probably feel the house represents the EGO–I mean, how hard do people try to get in House Beautiful?)

Spiral staircases, and going up them, would symbolize SLOW GROWTH to me.

In other words, you are going somewhat laterally on a spiral staircase as you go vertically, as opposed to the traditional “straight up” staircase.

In summary, it appears you are ready to take something to the next level–probably spiritual growth or self improvement–but you feel you haven’t laid the proper foundation on the existing level.

well, sometimes in order to bring about effective change only you can shake those foundations.

GSR: I can relate up to a point. I have dreams of performing on stage, and invariably something goes wrong every time. I love dreams that I wake up from laughing out loud!

Felix: hello and welcome :) .

Dreams fascinate me too. I’m not sure how much of this applies to me, but the part about spiral symbolising growth ring a bell. A loud bell.

ZW: are you saying that I’m going the long way about it by dreaming of spiral staircase? That there could be a short cut somewhere…

(The part about EGO and House Beautiful is a classic! Loved it :) )

M: that’s very true. Shaking it to the point where you have to change it is a bit like diving off the deep end.

  6. zen wizard says:

Spiral staircases are also significant because going up them, we wind around and we can’t see where we are ultimately going.

So they could symbolize GROWTH, coupled with FEAR OF CHANGE.

I.e., when we go up the typical spiral staircase, we know we are going UP–we just don’t know what it will look like when we get there.

  7. zen wizard says:

I hate to also belabor the hypnotherapy point, but envisioning spiral staircases is EXTREMELY effective in hypnotherapy (from what little I know about it.)

The patient only has to envision, like, 5 steps down, and they are under hypnosis (depending on the individual. Some individuals are more receptive to hypnotherapy than others.)

I love all the analysis of this dream!

I am thinking of building up IRL… but that might just become a nightmare!! LOL.

  9. Bemused says:

ZW: what you’re saying strikes a chord; growth and dislike for change. One brings about the other, I would think.

ZW: not having ever tried hypnotherapy, I can’t really comment. Sounds a bit like counting sheep before going to sleep…

GB: care to give your analysis for this dream? I’d love to read what you have to say :) .

Building, even refurbishing is a nigh mare! Usually, I want it done in a flash! Good luck, but don’t go building spiral staircases…

  10. general_boy says:

OK Bemused… my two cents. :)

Sounds to me like the dream of someone with a lot on the go, and limited time to do it. I think it’s about racing toward a goal ( finishing the house ) while perhaps not paying enough attention to details ( like nails LOL ). Perhaps on a deeper level, it’s a subconcious message to slow down and think about what you are doing in life ( do you really need a spiral staircase?? ), and what you want in and out of it ( TV’s and ornaments… or something more ).

And for the record… no… a spiral staircase is definitely not in the plan!!! ;)

  11. Bemused says:

GB: that was meant to say ‘nightmare’ in my previous comment. Grr… typos!

I can relate to what you’re saying, having a lot on the mind and forgetting important stuff that holds it together. Hmm… might be onto something here.

Do I really need it? Dunno. I definitely want it…

Cool! If you start dreaming of spiral staircases you’ll have me to blame! :)
